You're in the middle of an ordinary moment. A conversation. A walk. A room you've never been in before. And then it happens. A sudden, total certainty: this has already occurred. Exactly this. The words being spoken, the quality of light, the precise arrangement of people and objects. You know it's the present. You also know, with equal force, that it's the past.
Both at the same time. For about two seconds.
Then it's gone. The timeline repairs itself. You carry on.
Roughly two-thirds of people report experiencing déjà vu. Most shrug it off. A glitch. A curiosity. Something the brain does sometimes. Nobody treats it as important.
It might be one of the most important things the brain ever shows you.
The timestamp
Here is what happens during déjà vu, stated simply.
The content of the moment is correct. You know where you are. You know who you're with. You know what's happening. Nothing about the experience is inaccurate.
What's wrong is when the brain says it's happening.
The present moment has been stamped as already-occurred. "This is happening now" has been labelled "this has already happened." The experience is accurate. The temporal placement is not.
This sounds like a minor malfunction. A filing error. The brain put the wrong date on a document. Interesting but inconsequential.
Except it raises a question that, once asked, is difficult to put down.
If the brain can put the wrong timestamp on a moment, then the timestamp is something the brain applies. And if the timestamp is applied, then the sense of "now" that accompanies every other moment of your life is also applied. Not perceived. Produced.
How time is built
A 2023 paper on time marking in perception, published in the journal Cognition, stated it directly: "The representation of time in the brain is not actual time. It is neural activity that encodes temporal features."
This is worth reading twice. The time you experience is not time. It is neural activity that represents time. The brain generates temporal features and attaches them to experience. The sense of "this is happening now" is one such feature. The sense of "this happened before" is another.
Usually the two are applied correctly. The present gets stamped as present. The past gets stamped as past. The system works so well that you never notice it's a system. The timestamp arrives with the experience so seamlessly that the two seem like the same thing.
Déjà vu pulls them apart. For two seconds, the present gets the past's stamp. And in those two seconds, the mechanism becomes visible.
Research on temporal binding confirms this from another direction. The perceived timing of events can be shifted, compressed, or expanded by nearby stimuli. In cross-modal experiments, the brain's judgment of when something happened can be manipulated by what else is happening around it. The temporal order of events is not fixed by the events themselves. It is assigned by the brain.
You have probably experienced smaller versions of this. The stopped-clock illusion, where the second hand of a clock appears to freeze for a moment when you first glance at it. The compression of time during a car accident, where seconds seem to stretch. The disappearance of entire hours during absorbed work. In each case, the brain's temporal representation has shifted. The events themselves haven't changed. The timestamps have.
Déjà vu is the most dramatic version. The brain doesn't just stretch or compress time. It places the present in the past. And for two seconds, you experience what it's like for the temporal system to be demonstrably, undeniably wrong.
The timeline you live on
Now consider what this means for the rest of your experience.
You live on a timeline. Yesterday happened. Today is happening. Tomorrow will happen. Events are arranged in order. The present moves forward along a line from past to future. This feels as natural as gravity. It feels like the structure of reality itself.
Déjà vu shows that the positions on this timeline are assigned. The present moment doesn't carry its own label saying "now." The brain applies the label. Usually accurately. In déjà vu, inaccurately.
This means the continuous, ordered, forward-moving timeline you experience your life on is not something you're riding. It is something your brain is building. Event by event, moment by moment, the brain places each experience on a line and tells you where it belongs. And you believe it, because the alternative, that time as you know it is a construction, is too strange to sit with for long.
But you've sat with it. Every time déjà vu happens, you sit with it for two seconds. The timeline buckles. The present and the past occupy the same position. And for a moment, the structure that organises your entire sense of reality shows itself as something made rather than something given.
Then the buckle smooths out. The timeline restores. You carry on. And you forget that you saw the seam.
The self that needs the timeline
The self, as you experience it, is a creature of time.
"I" am the one who did those things in the past. "I" am doing this in the present. "I" will do those things tomorrow. Identity is a sequence. Your sense of being someone continuous depends entirely on events being arranged in order on a reliable timeline. Remove the timeline and the self doesn't have a surface to stand on.
Think about what happens when memory is severely disrupted. When someone can no longer place events in temporal order, their sense of self fragments. They know facts. They recognise faces. But the thread that connects "who I was" to "who I am" to "who I will be" has broken. The self requires the timeline the way a sentence requires the order of its words. Rearrange the words and the meaning collapses.
Déjà vu doesn't rearrange the words. It just moves one of them, briefly, to the wrong position. And even that small displacement is enough to create the uncanny feeling everyone recognises. Something is off. The world is correct but the time is wrong. And the "I" that depends on time being reliable flickers, just slightly, before the system corrects itself.
Most people describe déjà vu as eerie. Strange. Unsettling in a way that's hard to name. What they're feeling, I think, is the ground moving. Not the ground of the room. The ground of the self. The timeline that identity is built on has shown itself to be, for two seconds, unreliable. And the self, which depends on that reliability, briefly loses its footing.
What the traditions noticed
The contemplative traditions questioned time directly. Not with brain scanners. With sustained attention to experience.
In Advaita Vedanta, past and future are described as movements of thought. Not features of reality. The past exists as memory, which is a present-moment mental event. The future exists as anticipation, which is also a present-moment mental event. Neither the past nor the future is ever directly experienced. What is experienced is always this. Always now. The timeline on which the self arranges its history is, in this analysis, a construction of thought.
This is not a denial that events occur in sequence. Causes precede effects. Tuesday comes before Wednesday. The clock moves forward. But the felt sense of time, the experience of existing on a line that stretches from birth to death, is something the mind generates. It is not given by reality. It is given by the mind's habit of placing each moment in relation to remembered moments and anticipated moments. Take away the remembering and the anticipating, and what remains is not a point on a line. It is presence without temporal coordinates.
The Buddhist tradition arrives at the same place through different language. Impermanence, anicca, is not just the observation that things change. It is the observation that the present moment is all there is, and that the mind's attempt to hold onto moments, to arrange them into a stable sequence, to build a timeline and ride it, is the source of suffering. The self that depends on the timeline suffers because the timeline is always in motion. What the self calls stability is actually the brain's continuous, effortful generation of temporal order. Déjà vu is the one moment when that effort briefly, visibly, fails.
Two seconds
Déjà vu lasts two seconds. The timeline buckles, then repairs. The self flickers, then stabilises. You carry on.
Most people treat it as a curiosity. A brain hiccup. Something to mention at dinner and then forget.
But in those two seconds, something was revealed that the brain usually hides so well you never think to look for it. The sense of time is generated. "Now" and "then" are labels applied by a process. The continuous, ordered timeline your self depends on is a construction so seamless you mistake it for reality.
The construction is good. It works. You need it to function. Without it, events would have no order, actions would have no consequences, and identity would have no thread to hold itself together.
But you saw the seam. For two seconds, the present and the past were the same moment. The brain applied the wrong label and for a fraction of your life, the scaffolding was visible.
The timeline went back to normal. The self went back to normal. Everything is as it was.
Except that you know, now, that the scaffolding is there. That the sense of time moving forward, carrying you with it, is something being done rather than something happening. That the "when" of every moment in your life was assigned, not inherent.
Déjà vu didn't break anything. It showed you something. Something the brain builds so quietly, so constantly, so perfectly that you live your entire life inside it without once seeing the walls.
Two seconds. And then the walls disappeared again.
